Stretch & Challenge Programme
We want you to excel during your time with us but most of all we want you to be able to fulfil your aspirations. We are ambitious for all of our students. Success is about more than just A-levels - but we know from our connections with leading universities that three A* grades at A-level is always preferable to four subjects with A grades.
Our Stretch and Challenge programme has been specifically designed to allow you to demonstrate expertise and to develop the skills set needed for higher level study and/or the world of work. The three options within the programme are highly desired by universities and employers. Each is unique but provides progression for individual students based on their needs.
The idea is that students will take their chosen A-levels, plus a choice from one of the Stretch and Challenge offers:
A-level Further Maths
Many students wishing to study a Maths to a higher level at university will need to have a qualification in Further Maths to gain entry. This course is open to all those students who want to take Maths further and explore beyond the standard Maths A-level course. There are specific grade requirements for entry: please see our subject handbook. The course runs over two years.
Universities and employers are crying out for students to understand that there is still a need for Maths when they leave school. They see too many students not carrying on with Maths post GCSE and then struggling with the mathematical elements within their degree course or work two years later. They are keen for students who are not taking Maths A-level but who are looking to read a degree with a mathematical element, or to work with numbers, to choose Core Maths. The maths content does not extend beyond GCSE level and is based around problem-solving and practical maths. The benefit is that it keeps maths ticking over – practice makes perfect! This course would work well for those keen to keep their Maths up but do not want to choose Maths A-level. The course runs over two years.
EPQ (Extended Project Qualification)
Have you ever wanted to be in charge of exactly what you are studying? The project allows each student to embark on a self-directed and self-motivated project. Students must choose a topic, then plan, research and develop their idea and decide on their finished product. This will usually be a 5,000 word essay but students can opt to create an artefact and write a shorter report.
Students will be timetabled with a teacher who will supervise the process throughout Y 12. The end product will be completed in the summer term of Y 12, and is then followed by a short presentation. The course allows a student to develop not only research and writing skills necessary for higher level study or work success, but the chance to delve into something that really interests them – great for talking about at interviews or in general conversation! This course runs over one year.
